Combined, the wordless message is clear: these men are to be avoided.
As you approach the vehicles, the boy’s attitude changes from flight to caution. Within moments of starting the game in a humid forest, you hear the distant barking of a dog and engines idling. Instead, it uses character animation, audio, and intuitive object placement to convey information to the player. This game has no user interface or HUD, nor on-screen text or dialogue. In addition to addressing my heart directly with light straight out of the film noir, Inside is a beautiful example of contextual teaching and the use of environmental cues. Again, there’s a certain mechanical kinship with Playdead’s previous title. The young protagonist, dressed in red, is always running away from danger and the like limbo, almost always traveling from left to right, overcoming obstacles by manipulating the environment (both inanimate and semi-animated). It may also be no coincidence that both films share a theme of persecution (and vulnerable children). For example, compare the image above with this still from the latter film. Some of the frames are straight out of the German Expressionism-inspired film title like M or The Night of the Hunter. The angular shadows, cast predominantly in dark blues and grays, contribute to the somber, oppressive atmosphere found in the game’s abandoned industrial complexes and flooded silos.
Indoors Color palette is more expressive than limbo Monochrome, but Playdead absolutely reworked the contrasts of light and shadow found in their first game.
